Many of us take for granted that we will own our own homes or businesses some day. But for too many people in communities across the country, the dream of working for themselves, owning their own home, or living in a good neighborhood is simply out of reach.

Fortunately, there are many national nonprofit organizations whose missions are to help build more affordable housing for low- and moderate-income families, develop small businesses, educate individuals and families to build wealth, or revitalize communities. It takes all of us — nonprofits, for-profits, and community leaders — to build and rebuild our neighborhoods into healthy places to live, work, and do business.

Part of our philanthropic objective is to sustain community efforts and provide funding flexibility so nonprofits can distribute funds as they know will best serve their clients and build their organizations. Our national partners are an integral part of the neighborhoods they serve. These are organizations that complement what we’re able to do in a local community and collectively impact hundreds of neighborhoods across the country. It’s possible an organization needs funding for capacity building or operating support at the national level; it may be just as possible the funding needs to be directed to the local level to strengthen that office’s reach. And when disaster strikes, we are prepared to respond nationally when need overwhelms local capabilities to respond.
